Geography
The Peninsula Corridor
Area code 650 was split from the 415 area code on August 2, 1997, as telephone demand on the San Francisco Peninsula outgrew a single code. It covers most of San Mateo County and the northwestern portion of Santa Clara County — the corridor that runs from Daly City and South San Francisco in the north to Palo Alto and Los Altos in the south, and west to the Pacific coast.
The geography is unusually compact for the economic weight it carries: roughly 30 miles of peninsula between the Bay and the Pacific, home to Stanford University, San Francisco International Airport, and a concentration of technology and life sciences enterprises with few parallels anywhere in the world.

Legal Context
A Dense Legal Environment
The 650's concentration of venture capital, emerging technology companies, research institutions, and highly compensated executives generates a correspondingly dense legal environment. Transactions, employment relationships, and intellectual property matters arising in the 650 routinely involve the most sophisticated participants — and the most sophisticated counsel — in American commercial law.
The legal community serving the 650 spans large international firms with Silicon Valley offices, specialized boutiques, and independent practitioners. California law governs most employment and equity matters; Delaware law governs most of the incorporated entities.
Venture & Private Equity
Term sheets, preferred stock, pro-rata rights, board governance, and M&A — the full lifecycle of funded companies.
Executive Compensation
Offer letters, equity grants, non-competes, RSUs, and severance — for executives operating in one of the world's highest-compensation markets.
Intellectual Property
Patents, trade secrets, licensing, and IP assignment — central to the value of most enterprises in the corridor.
Life Sciences & Biotech
Genentech, founded in South San Francisco, established the Peninsula as a life sciences hub alongside its technology identity.
Employment Law
California's employee-protective framework applies to the full range of 650-area employment relationships, with significant carve-outs and complexities for the innovation sector.
